Big news for cаr enthusiаsts and safety buffs! The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) just dropped its list of vehicles slаted for their 5-Star Safety Ratings testing for the model year 2025. We’re tаlking about a hefty lineup this year—37 vehicles in totаl, including some cool electric and hybrid models.
So, what’s the big deal? Well, these tests are a big part of NHTSA’s New Car Assessment Program, which is pretty much like the Oscars for car safety. They put cars through the wringer with a bunch of crash scenarios—think frontal, side, and rollover tests—to see how they stack up in keeping you safe.
This year, they’re also putting a spotlight on some nifty advanced driver assistance technologies. We’re talking about stuff like lane departure warnings, forward collision alerts, and the superhero-sounding crash imminent braking and dynamic brake support. Five vehicles are getting extra attention to check how these tech marvels perform in the real world.
Why does this matter to you? Sophie Shulman, NHTSA’s Deputy Administrator, summed it up nicely. She said they’re all about giving us the info we need to pick the safest ride. Plus, it pushes carmakers to up their game in tech, which can only mean good things for road safety.
And guess what? Once all the testing is wrapped up, you can check out how each car did right from the comfort of your home. The results will be posted on NHTSA’s website and will also appear on those new car stickers at dealerships.
Here’s a peek at some of the vehicles on this year’s safety check list:
- Audi Q6 e-tron EV
- BMW X3
- A couple of Cadillacs, including the CT5 with a V6 and the iconic Escalade
- Chevy’s doing big things with the Equinox and the Silverado EV
- Ford’s lineup includes the Expedition and Explorer
And there’s a lot more where that came from!
Plus, they’ve picked a few for special testing of those crash avoidance technologies:
- Chevy Equinox
- Ford Expedition

It’s kind of a big deal because knowing your car is equipped to handle the worst gives you peace of mind. Plus, with safety tech moving at warp speed, it’s cool to see which cars are leading the pack. Stay tuned to see how these models fare—it's sure to be interesting!
