Indianapolis Gets Free Autonomous Shuttle Service From Toyota
by AutoExpert | 27 June, 2021
Anyone from Indianapolis here? If so, congrats! Toyota has just launched an autonomous shuttle service along with the Indiana Economic Development Corporation and May Mobility.
The service is free of charge and has become available on June 1. It serves both Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and Indianapolis downtown. The fleet includes 5 Lexus EX 450h SUVs and one Polaris GEM, with wheelchair accessibility.
The shuttles have 9 designated stops, where they arrive every 10-15 minutes with a rotating loop. Masks are required for all passengers, even if there are UVC lights and partitions installed on each shuttle.
The proactive partnerships in Indianapolis have helped Toyota launch this initiative for the first time and integrate May Mobility in the local transport options. The global impact will be thoroughly studied so that the knowledge and experience can be transferred to other locations in the world.
